Rail Transport Modeling Scales

Rail transport modeling is one of the world’s largest hobbies. It consists of a collection of trains built to a small scale  or large scale, as in miniature size trains and its accessories like a train station and landscape including tracks and  traffic signals and levers to manipulate the movements. This hobby has been around for a long time since the inception of  trains. All the model trains are either hand made or manufactured by companies for the purpose of this hobby. The trains are  always made at a ratio smaller than the actual sized train.

Measurements of the size are in scale and gauge, the unit of  measure for scale is in inches per foot and the unit of measure for gauge is in mm. So when somebody says train scale they  mean the size of the model train. When somebody mentions train gauge they mean the size of the track that the model train  uses or is suitable for.  Thus a train scale is for the size of the train and train gauge is for the track this model train  runs on. All modellists keep a collection of trains and also a train station that is either depicting a real train station or  one they have made using their imagination.

Many hobbyists are specialized in making the landscape and some are even called  artists for their life like depiction of the representation of life they make. The model railway layout consists of the train  station, train tracks, train signals, levers to change tracks, landscape consists of area around the train which can be flat  level or hilly, with shrubs, trees, fields, animals, people, and even pebbles as part of the landscape. There are exhibitions  and fairs held to show off the model trains and the sets. Some people even have an antique collection and there are many  people who love to collect such items and are willing to pay a large amount for these models.

Enthusiasts and new comers both  are welcomed to the exhibitions and fairs. A lot of information is exchanged regarding the model trains especially the scales  and gauges used. Some of the scales are Z scale, G scale, Live Steam – there are several ranges in live steam, grand scale,  SE scale, gauge 3, wide gauge, llm scale, S gauge, O scale trains, TT scale and several others. Each are prevalent in a particular  country or area of the country.
